Obituary of Lorraine Mary Henrietta Hatfield

HATFIELD, Lorraine M. - After a gallant and lengthy struggle with Alzheimer’s, her body now finally at rest, Lorraine M. Hatfield died May 16, 2009 at Marshall Gowland Manor ministered to lovingly until the end by caregivers and family. She was born October 3, 1914 in Grand Falls, New Brunswick, daughter of Loretta Theriault and Joseph Betram Powers. Her compassion for others led her to the study of nursing at Moncton’s Hotel Dieu Hospital from which she graduated in 1935 as a registered nurse. She worked at the Provincial Psychiatric Hospital in Saint John, N.B. where she met her husband, Dr. George Gordon Hatfield, who predeceased her in 1985. Their marriage of forty-eight years was hallmarked by love and mutual support throughout good times and bad. She was a loving mother to her three children, Brian David, Margaret Lorraine and George Raymond each of whom treasures memories of her devotion. Her talents were many and varied and always directed to enriching the lives of those around her. She enjoyed nothing more than providing piano accompaniment for numerous happy sing-songs. She delighted in entertaining and was a gracious host, presiding over beautifully decorated tables and delicious meals, whether for a gathering of friends or her children’s birthday parties. Her artistic skills found expression in her garden, at her sewing machine as well as in her sketchpad. She acted upon her care and concern for others through prayer and many quiet acts of kindness and charity. She held a special place in the hearts of her grandchildren: Beth (Munro), Steven (deceased, 2001), and Mike Hatfield; David, Theresa and Christopher Carpeneto, and Amy Hatfield, and her two daughters-in-law, Carol (Burge) Hatfield and Cindy (VanGoethem) Hatfield. Visitation will be held at the McKENZIE & BLUNDY FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTRE, 431 N. Christina St., Sarnia, on Tuesday, May 19, 2009 from 7-9 p.m. Following a private family service, she will be interred in St. Peter’s Cemetery, London.
