Dorothy was a lovely individual and talented actor. I am very sorry to learn today that she died and I wanted to offer my sincerest sympathy to her entire family. Dorothy was a good friend to me in Toronto. She gave a courageous performance in my final directing project at York University's undergrad directing program — Florence Lancaster in Noël Coward’s The Vortex — and she was instrumental in connecting me with what led to my first conducting job on Camelot in 1990.
I'd like to share a musical tribute to Dorothy, courtesy of Lisa Kulchycki as Guenevere at the Scarborough Theatre Guild, on the stage where Dorothy played for many wonderful shows. The musical direction credit is Thomas Mitchell, my former mentor, but I’m pretty sure I’m the one conducting up in the loft, hired as an assistant to take over the final week for Tom in April 1990 — I would never have had this job and an amazing first opportunity if it weren't for Dorothy Clifton.

Break a leg Dorothy, on whatever celestial stage you're playing. I'm sure you're a big hit in heaven! You were loved here on earth.

So sorry to hear of Dorothy's passing. I worked with her on a number of shows with Stage Centre Productions in Scarborough/North York in the 1980s and early 1990s. I was a costumer with the group. My most memorable image of her was as Miss Prism in THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ERNEST.
She really brought her characters to life and lit up the stage of any production in which she was cast.
All the best to her family,
Linda Brent
