Obituary of John Slancek
SLANCEK, John – Peacefully with his family at his side, John passed away into the loving arms of his Saviour at Bluewater Health, Palliative Care on Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at the age of 98. Also welcoming him into heaven is his loving wife of 73 years Leta (May 2019). Precious dad of Cathy Fielder (Brian), Bonnie Werschler (Ted Baldwin) and Pattie Fraser (Ron). Loving Honey Grandpa of Ryan Werschler, Darren Fielder and Marcy Vanderveen (Dave). Special Great Honey Grandpa of Eli. Favourite Uncle of Bob Sladovnik (Cheryl) and Carol Heinrich. Predeceased by infant grandson Jarrod Werschler, parents John & Mary Slancek, father and mother-in-law Joseph & Mary Kondra. John was a dedicated employee of Wonder Bread, Purity Dairy and lead custodian at St. Clair High School. After retirement John was a crossing guard at Lansdowne and Lakeroad Public Schools. John was a founding and active member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, where he sang in the choir, ushered, and did many jobs behind the scenes that no one ever knew about. Our heartfelt thanks to Pastor Jason Kouri for his constant dedication to our dad. He was a member of the Slovak Society. He enjoyed bowling and was deeply involved in his children’s and grandchildren’s activities. John was a happy and enthusiastic participant in the Alzheimer’s day program at Marshall Gowland Manor. After moving from his home on Minto, John moved to Sumac Lodge where he enjoyed 5 years of wonderful care and compassion. The family would like to thank the nursing, recreation and kitchen staff of Sumac Lodge for their unbelievable care of our dad. We would also like to thank Dr. Joseph Spano, Dr. Gannon, Dr. Steve Matthews and Brenda DiMuzio for their love and care. Our family will never forget their kindness. Special thanks to St. Michael’s Parish Caring and Sharing Team for their constant thoughtfulness shown to John. Our thanks to the emergency staff, Doctor Maddison and the palliative care nurses for their care in giving our dad the dignity he so deserved during his last days. A special note of thanks to Annie who sang to dad in palliative care and brought joy to him and our family during a difficult time. Visitation will be held at the McKENZIE & BLUNDY FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTRE, 431 Christina St. N., Sarnia, on Monday from 5-8 p.m. and on Tuesday from 10-11 a.m. at the church. The funeral service will be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church (corner of Indian & Hickory) on Tuesday, August 27, 2019 at 11 a.m. Burial to follow in Lakeview Cemetery. In lieu of cards and flowers, friends who wish may send memorial donations to Redeemer Lutheran Church, 429 Indian Rd.
