Obituary of Nicola Mazzella
MAZZELLA, NICOLA – Peacefully with family by his side, Nicola Mazzella died on Monday, September 14, 2020 at Bluewater Health, Palliative Care at the age of 77. Beloved husband, for 53 years, of Maria (nee Pinelli). Loving father of Rosaria Gulas (Michael), Filomena Mazzella (Terry Au), Maria-Grazia Blum (Darryl) and Giovanna Mazzella. Proud Nonno of Benjamin, Sabrina, Xander, Anissa, Alessia and Nicholas. Survived by his sisters Filomena (late husband Mario Buonomano) and Francesca (Francesco Cuomo) in Italy, Luisa (Michele Patella) in England, and by his brother Aniello (Anna) in Italy. Also survived by brothers and sisters-in-law in Canada and Italy and many nieces and nephews in Italy and England. Predeceased by parents Giovanni & Anna Mazzella, and his daughters Anna (1970) and Rita (1986).
Nicola’s life was his family and he would have gone to the ends of the earth for all his girls. He was a devout Catholic who attended mass and said the rosary daily. He also attended weekly adoration of the blessed sacrament. Nicola was a proud 4th degree Knights of Columbus member and was the first to help anyone in need. He devoted much time to his duties as a knight, serving at funerals and at mass.
Nicola enjoyed playing cards with fellow parishioners and was an avid soccer fan. He was a hard worker as a labourer with Local 1089 and was proud to have been one of the workers who helped build the new St. Clair tunnel. He was also proud of the many fruits and vegetables in his garden and enjoyed making homemade wine.
Nicola was kind and generous with a big heart. He was always happy to stop for a chat and everyone seemed to know him. Despite a major heart attack in 1999, he lived his life as he always had, with courage, strength and perseverance. He continued to live life to the fullest even when he developed further progressive health challenges including the rare aggressive cancer that finally took him from us. His love, concern, and selfless dedication for his family and others was evident until the end. We love you dearly and miss you deeply.
