I was very sorry to hear of your Dad’s passing, Nancy. My deepest sympathies to your family. I know you have lots of amazing memories of your Dad, but I thought I might add one of my own.
As a kid, I had limited interactions with your father, which was primarily a quick, but respectful, “Hello Mr. Dykes” as we crossed paths in the kitchen. As a teenager, I found him, like all fathers of the era, very intimidating. I will never forget the day that instead of the usual “hello”, he stopped me and sat me down at your kitchen table, asking me to explain why I wanted to transfer from St. Pat’s to Northern High School.
I was so nervous talking to “ Mr. Dykes”, but I explained the best I could. He countered, but I persevered and was able to give a better account of my reasoning. He took a moment to pause, which felt like eternity, but was then satisfied with my explanation and sent us on our way.
Later I realized that because of that discussion and having to put my thoughts into words, I was confident that I was making the right decision for me. And instead of being a distant authority figure, I realized your Dad was kind and thoughtful, and I appreciated that he was always looking out for my best interests.
I’m sorry for your loss.
Jane

Passing on condolences to Brenda and family. My mom was a table mate of Bob’s for a time at Trillium Villa and Bob lived down the hall from my mom Fran. He was always pleasant in his conversations with my mom and me. He reminded me a lot of my dad! I will miss his smile and twinkly blue eyes.

I have wonderful memories of growing up with Nancy and spending time with her family. Mr. Dykes was a dynamic man, there was always a spark of mischievous and a great sense of humour! I still try to like a martini just because of him! I'm keeping all of you in my prayers!

Sorry for your loss for all loved ones of Mr. Dykes. I always remember Mr. Dykes reading when we were teenagers and thinking how did he find the time with such a busy household:) Thinking of you all Nancy at this time of your loss.

I will remember your Dad through my teenage eyes.He ran the house like my dad did ours. His word was the final say which was a good thing or we kids would have run circles around our Moms. I spent many hours at the Dykes home on Westwood with Nancy. One of my favourite memory of your dad was of him and Jim laughing while watching the 3 Stooges together. I always found it so funny how much humour they found in the show as they were two of the smartest people I have known.
I am so very sorry for your loss and my deepest sympathies to the Dykes Family.

When we moved to Sarnia in 1975 we were fortunate to move on the same street as the Dykes. Our families became good friends. I fondly remember the great dinners we had with Brenda and Bob and both in Toronto and Sarnia. My deepest condolences to the Dykes family.

While I never had the privilege of meeting Mr. Dykes, I have the honour of calling his one daughter one of my dearest and closest friends. May the many great memories of Mr. Dykes comfort you all in this difficult time. I have learned of him through the numerous stories shared by Nancy and from these, I glean that he was a man who deeply loved and inspired many around him. May you all hold these treasures close to your heart.
My deepest sympathies to you all.
