We are sadden to just find out of Hart's passing! He will be forever remembered as a very special person in our lives, especially Matt's. Sharing many Sundays as a youngster with Hart at the Honda dealership! We are extremely grateful for the love, care and kindness Hart was given by Eliza and her family!

We were saddened to hear that Hartfried had passed away. He joined our family early in the 1960s and we spent many happy times with him and Ann when we visited Sarnia. He was a great support to our father and mother and to Ann when they had gone their separate ways. He was always on call to deal with emergencies including one time when he was hurt trimming a tree in the garden. Looking back now at the old family photos we are left with warm memories of a kind and gracious friend. Our condolences to the family".

I will always remember Hartfrid as the very kind and caring person that he always was. We spent many happy years together, working together at the car dealerships, and going on several trips to Europe and cruises to Bermuda and the Carribean.
Our trips to Europe always took in visits to family and car museums and assembly plants. He owned a.1951 Porsche Coupe that he was restoring. On one of our trips we even brought back original parts for his Porsche.
Previous to his emigration to Canada in 1951 he worked on a farm in Württemberg, Germany. His first job in Canada was on a farm in Petrolia. His next job was as a Volkswagen mechanic at the dealership on Indian Road in Sarnia. His love of cars led him to take on dealerships for Fiat, Alpha Romeo and BMW. In 1972 he gave up these dealerships and took on the Honda dealership. This he managed until his retirement in 2010.
In 1964 Hartfrid, with the help of his friends, built our house on Blackwell Side Road. I remained there until 2017.
With fond remembrance, Ann Hentschel.

When Hartfried first came to Canada he worked for a farmer near Petrolia on LaSalle line. My parents later worked for the same farmer after Hart left and they arrived in Canada. Mom always said that Hart paved the way for them, he was such a good worker that the farmer wanted German immigrants working for him. He was a kind, intelligent gentleman, always interested in others and wanting to help. I know my parents thought highly of him, and were always happy to meet up with him. My sincere condolences to his family and friends, he will be missed. Fred Brown

We send heartfelt condolences from Germany – where Hartfrid (as his first name was spelled in Germany) is sadly missed by the family of his niece Regina, daughter to his late sister Leonore. We will always remember him as the cheerful, optimistic, and charming man that he was.
He shared the time of his childhood in Tansania with my mother and their sister Gudela. They grew up on a farm next to the Kilimanjaro with their mother, my grandmother Isolde, and their father Kurt Hentschel.
After the family’s return to Germany Hartfrid very soon developed a lifelong love of cars, especially small German cars such as the VW Beetle, which, together with the Karman Ghia and BMW, were the first cars he tried to sell in Canada to the customers of the car dealership of which he later became a partner. As long as he was an active automobile dealer he came to Germany once a year, often with his first wife Ann, to visit the international Automobile Salon in Frankfurt am Main. We enjoyed to get to see him on these occasions – and he always traveled all over Germany to visit a wide-spread net of relatives and friends.
Germany, especially Munich and Bavaria, were always important points of reference in his life. He kept up to date with the latest news through Deutsche Welle, whose programs were on his daily schedule. But he also enjoyed travelling to Italy with my family, my husband Thomas and our daughter Maxie, when he visited; he loved good food, whether Italian or Bavarian, a good beer and a nice wine. On many an evening, for example on the occasion of my 50th birthday 13 years ago, the last time he was in Germany, we experienced him as an inspiring conversationalist and storyteller and always as an old-school gentleman.
Maxie and I visited him again in Sarnia in 2017, where we also met his last life partner Eliza and her son Manfred Gruening. We are grateful that Hartfrid was in such good hands in his last years. We will miss him!

Hart looked after my first Honda, a 1977 Civic Hatchback. He offered skill, knowledge honesty and fair value.
Once when Hart was out walking I rode by on my 1968 BMW R69s motorcycle, and he stopped in his tracks and watched me go by in a style he admired.
Hart always earned his way in life.........much respect.

There is a sadness in my heart today to hear of the passing of Hart. He was the founder of Auto House Honda. Actually Auto Haus Honda. Haus is pronounced like house in German. I came along and we both had a laugh when I “Canadianized” it. I know both myself and many current and former employees and customers will always remember you for the special guy you always were. Your DNA is still all over current operations. Godspeed to you Hart to your final destination and next “ponderosa”. You had a few of them. Thanks you for all you did for me, Dan Brush, owner Auto House Honda & Mazda.
